"The horizon is a question. Every step is an answer."
—Purrsara proverb
The Purrsara are a race of feline folk whose appearances are as varied as the countless cats of the natural world. Some possess the striped coats of tigers, the spotted hides of jaguars and leopards, or the tawny manes of lions, while others resemble ordinary house cats with every imaginable color, pattern, and coat length. Their expressive tails, swiveling ears, and sharp eyes often reveal their emotions long before they speak.
Native to the endless deserts of Grash'Sharim, the Purrsara are defined by two instincts that exist in constant harmony: the comfort of belonging to a pride and an irresistible curiosity about the unknown. Few races produce as many merchants, explorers, archaeologists, storytellers, or adventurers. Wherever roads are traveled and stories are exchanged, a Purrsara is rarely far away.
Though many know them as charming traders with quick wit and quicker smiles, beneath every Purrsara lies the heart of a patient predator—observant, adaptable, and forever drawn toward the next mystery.
Among the Purrsara, curiosity is more than a personality trait—it is considered a sacred gift.
They believe every soul is born with what they call the First Calling: a fascination that quietly grows throughout childhood until it becomes impossible to ignore. One Purrsara may find endless wonder in forgotten ruins, another in music, astronomy, cuisine, magic, birds, or distant cultures. No Calling is considered greater than another, for each reveals a different corner of the world's beauty.
To ignore one's Calling is believed to leave the spirit restless. Elder Purrsara encourage young kits to explore widely, try new crafts, travel whenever possible, and ask endless questions until they discover what sets their heart racing.
An old legend tells that when the first Purrsara awoke beneath the desert stars, their creator asked them only one question:
"What lies beyond the next dune?"
The first Purrsara replied,
"I do not know."
Rather than disappointment, the creator smiled.
"Then go find out."
Ever since, every journey, every unanswered question, and every new friendship has been seen as an act of reverence.
Unlike many races that value permanence, the Purrsara embrace movement. While they maintain thriving cities among the oases and sandstone cliffs of Grash'Sharim, many feel an instinctive desire to leave home for a time once they come of age.
Some seek forgotten knowledge. Some pursue fortune. Others simply wish to see what exists beyond the horizon.
Merchant caravans led by Purrsara travel nearly every major trade route in Arcainia. They deal in spices, textiles, enchanted curiosities, relics, rare beasts, and stories gathered from every land they visit. To a Purrsara, conversation is often as valuable as coin, for every stranger carries experiences worth collecting.
Among their people, wealth earns admiration, but experience earns respect. A caravan master who has crossed ten kingdoms is celebrated more highly than one who merely owns ten shops.
The homeland of the Purrsara is a place of harsh beauty. Towering sandstone mesas rise above endless golden dunes, broken only by scattered oases and bustling caravan cities. Beneath those shifting sands lie buried temples, forgotten palaces, and weathered shrines dedicated to both ancient feline guardians and mysterious serpentine figures.
Whether these monuments belonged to the ancestors of the Purrsara, the Naga, or an even older civilization has long been forgotten. Every newly uncovered ruin reignites old debates, while treasure hunters, scholars, and priests race to uncover relics before the desert reclaims them once more.
Many Purrsara spend their lives chasing these forgotten places, convinced that somewhere beneath the sands lies the truth of their people's earliest history.
The native tongue of the Purrsara is Purrsian, a language unlike any other spoken in Arcainia.
Rather than relying solely upon words, Purrsian combines purrs, growls, chirps, hisses, ear position, tail movement, posture, and subtle shifts in tone into a single form of communication. Emotion, intention, and meaning are conveyed simultaneously, allowing fluent speakers to understand one another with remarkable precision.
To outsiders, conversations often resemble little more than animal sounds accompanied by expressive gestures. To a native speaker, however, each purr or flick of the tail carries meaning that cannot be fully translated into Common. A simple rumbling purr may express reassurance, affection, gratitude, amusement, or apology depending entirely upon its rhythm and accompanying body language.
Because so much emotion is communicated instinctively, experienced Purrsara often find it difficult to lie convincingly to one another.
Perhaps no aspect of Purrsara society is more remarkable than how deeply their personalities are influenced during childhood. Young kits instinctively mirror the social behaviors of those who raise them. Their earliest environment shapes how they communicate, express affection, resolve conflict, and interpret the emotions of others.
A Purrsara raised among other Purrsara naturally learns the countless unspoken customs of the pride—subtle greetings, body language, personal boundaries, and the layered meanings hidden within Purrsian speech. One raised among orcs often becomes more physically expressive, direct, and comfortable with loud communal gatherings. Those raised by elves frequently develop exceptional patience and graceful manners. A child raised primarily among humans may rely almost entirely upon spoken language, sometimes overlooking instinctive cues that other Purrsara recognize immediately.
Because these habits are learned rather than inherited, experienced Purrsara can often guess where another was raised within moments of meeting them. This remarkable adaptability has allowed Purrsara communities to flourish almost anywhere in the world.
Among the Purrsara exists a compassionate saying: "They never found their pride." It refers to individuals who grew up without meaningful contact with other Purrsara.
Such people often struggle to interpret the subtle body language that comes naturally to their kin. They may misunderstand greetings, overlook expressions of affection, or feel strangely out of place among members of their own race.
Rather than viewing them with pity or shame, Purrsara communities traditionally welcome these individuals and patiently teach them the customs they never had the opportunity to learn.
Many eventually become fluent in the language of the pride. Others embrace their unique upbringing and become exceptional diplomats, traders, or adventurers, effortlessly bridging cultures that others struggle to understand.
Life within Grash'Sharim has demanded uneasy compromises.
The Purrsara maintain a cautious non-aggression agreement with the desert orc clans. Though disputes over water, territory, and trade occasionally arise, both peoples recognize that survival in the desert often depends upon cooperation rather than conquest.
Relations with the Naga, however, remain bitter. Generations of conflict have left both civilizations convinced that the other defiled sacred places and stole pieces of a shared history. Each claims legitimacy over the forgotten temples scattered throughout the desert, and each views archaeological discoveries as proof of their own ancient heritage.
To this day, expeditions into newly uncovered ruins frequently become tense races against rival Naga explorers. Whether the feud began through betrayal, conquest, or simple misunderstanding has long since disappeared beneath the sands.
The Purrsara cultivate countless herbs suited to desert life, but none are more culturally significant than catnip and Moonsugar.
Catnip is an ordinary pleasure enjoyed throughout Purrsara society. It is brewed into aromatic teas, burned as incense during festivals, or dried and smoked among friends after meals. While its effects vary from person to person, it is generally associated with relaxation, laughter, conversation, and playful good spirits.
Moonsugar is another matter entirely. This fine white crystalline powder was originally used by temple mystics during carefully supervised divination rituals. By quieting the conscious mind, practitioners believed they could glimpse symbolic visions of possible futures hidden within dreams and altered states of awareness.
Over centuries, however, its sacred role faded. Today, Moonsugar is more commonly consumed as a recreational narcotic. Small amounts heighten confidence, sensation, energy, and emotion, while larger doses can blur reality into vivid hallucinations, distorted perception, and powerful emotional experiences.
Its addictive nature and unpredictable effects have led many kingdoms to regulate or outlaw its trade entirely, though smugglers continue to transport it across caravan routes throughout Arcainia.
Opinions among the Purrsara remain deeply divided. Some regard Moonsugar as a sacred remnant of ancient spiritual tradition deserving reverence and restraint. Others see only the devastation caused by addiction and abuse. Few subjects inspire fiercer debate around a desert campfire.
Purrsara names are typically melodic, flowing easily between rolling consonants and soft vowels. Many also earn descriptive nicknames throughout life that eventually replace their birth names among friends.
