"Long before the first god drew breath, before the first star ignited, there was the current." — The Book of Origins
The Veilstream is the eternal current that flows through every plane of existence. It is the unseen force that binds together life, death, dreams, memory, magic, and the souls of all living things. Though invisible to most mortals, its presence is woven into every moment of existence, sustaining the cosmos as blood sustains the body.
The gods do not rule the Veilstream, nor did they create it. Like gravity or the passage of time, it is one of the fundamental laws of reality. Even the gods themselves are bound by its flow.
Every spell cast, every dream dreamt, every soul reborn, and every divine miracle is, in some way, an interaction with the Veilstream. It is the heartbeat of creation.
Scholars often describe the Veilstream as an endless cosmic river, though no one truly knows its form. Some imagine a boundless ocean connecting every realm of existence, while others believe it is an invisible web stretching through reality itself.
These descriptions are merely attempts to explain something that mortal minds cannot fully comprehend.
The Veilstream is not a destination, nor a separate plane. It exists both within and beyond every world simultaneously, flowing through the material realm, the divine realms, the Dreamscape, the afterlife, and every plane in between.
Everything that possesses mana is connected to it. Every soul is carried by it. Every dream briefly touches it. Nothing exists outside its reach.
The Veilstream is responsible for the eternal cycle that sustains existence. At the beginning of all life, raw mana flows outward from the Pool of Mana at the heart of creation, spreading throughout the cosmos. From this mana springs life itself, granting every living creature a soul and the spark of consciousness.
Throughout life, every thought, memory, emotion, and dream subtly stirs the current. Each night, as mortals sleep, their minds drift closer to the Veilstream, where dreams intermingle before returning to their dreamers with the dawn.
When death comes, the soul releases its hold upon the body and enters the Veilstream once more. Guided by Revan, Angel of Death, it journeys toward judgment before being entrusted to Naver, Angel of Reincarnation, who leads worthy souls to the Pool of Mana. There, the soul is purified, its memories fade, and its essence is reborn into new life.
Thus the cycle continues without end. Mana becomes life. Life becomes memory. Memory becomes dream. Dream becomes soul. Soul becomes mana once again.
Although none can command the Veilstream itself, many gods safeguard different aspects of its eternal cycle.
Mechanus, Keeper of Time, protects the flow of time within the current, ensuring history progresses as it should.
Morphos, Lord of Dreams, watches over the dreams that drift through the Veilstream each night, weaving visions, nightmares, and prophecy alike.
Revan, Angel of Death, shepherds departed souls into the current, ensuring they begin their final journey.
Naver, Angel of Reincarnation, guides purified souls back to the Pool of Mana so the cycle of life may continue.
Magnificus, Master of Magic, devoted his existence to understanding the movement of mana through the Veilstream, unlocking countless arcane discoveries.
Other deities interact with the current according to their own divine domains, but none possess absolute authority over it. They are caretakers, not masters.
Though invisible during the day, the Veilstream becomes visible after sunset as luminous rivers of living light stretching across the heavens.
To many, it resembles an endless celestial aurora. Bands of sapphire, violet, emerald, silver, and pale gold drift silently across the stars, slowly shifting like rivers carried by an unseen tide.
Unlike ordinary auroras, the Veilstream is visible across much of the world, though its brilliance varies greatly. Regions rich in mana—such as ancient forests, sacred temples, powerful ley lines, and the great kingdoms of the elves—often witness breathtaking displays that illuminate the entire night sky.
In lands scarred by corruption, magical decay, or spiritual emptiness, the Veilstream grows faint. In the darkest places, its light disappears altogether, leaving the heavens unnaturally empty. Many scholars believe the brightness of the Veilstream reflects the spiritual health of a region.
The dreams of countless sleeping minds cause its ribbons to shimmer and dance. Peaceful nights produce gentle waves of soft blue and silver, while times of war, catastrophe, or great magical upheaval can stain the sky with crimson or violent violet currents visible across entire continents.
Different peoples claim to perceive the Veilstream differently. Elves see elegant ribbons woven between the stars. Dwarves describe glowing rivers flowing through invisible mountains. Powerful dragons perceive vast ley lines wrapping around the world, while experienced archmages often glimpse streams of pure mana coursing through the heavens.
Whether these are true differences or merely the mind interpreting an incomprehensible phenomenon remains unknown.
Most mortals encounter the Veilstream only through dreams. A rare few, however, learn to consciously enter its currents.
Known as Veilwalkers, these individuals project their spirits into the Veilstream while leaving their bodies behind. From within its currents, they may travel great distances, witness distant dreams, communicate with wandering souls, or glimpse places far beyond the Material Plane.
The practice is extraordinarily dangerous. Without exceptional magical skill—or divine protection—a Veilwalker risks becoming lost within the endless current. Many disappear forever, their souls unable to find their way back to their bodies.
Only the greatest archmages, divine beings, ancient dragons, and legendary heroes are believed to have mastered true Veilwalking.
Like any great river, the Veilstream is constantly in motion. Most of the time its flow remains calm and balanced. Occasionally, however, great events disturb its currents.
Massive wars, planar collisions, catastrophic magical disasters, or attempts to disrupt reincarnation may create powerful eddies within the Veilstream. Such disturbances often manifest as magical anomalies, prophetic dreams, restless spirits, or unstable regions where reality itself behaves unpredictably.
Scholars have identified several natural phenomena within the current:
Calm Waters, where dreams are peaceful and magic is unusually stable.
Rapids, where mana flows with exceptional strength, often giving rise to powerful ley lines.
Whirlpools, where lost souls and forgotten memories become trapped for centuries.
Mana Storms, violent surges capable of warping magic across entire regions.
Dead Waters, rare places where the Veilstream barely flows at all, causing magic to weaken and the night sky above to lose its celestial glow.
Many believe these disturbances are as natural to the Veilstream as storms are to the sea.
Ancient myths claim that the Veilstream is inhabited by beings born from its own essence. Most scholars dismiss such stories as symbolic. Others insist they are very real.
Legends speak of colossal Dream Whales that swim through sleeping minds, radiant Soul Lanterns that guide lost spirits back toward the current, ethereal Mana Serpents that coil around great ley lines, and stranger entities that have never set foot upon the Material Plane.
The Veilhounds are perhaps the best-known creatures with an innate connection to the Veilstream. Their uncanny ability to sense disturbances within its currents allows them to track powerful magic, restless spirits, and planar rifts long before other creatures become aware of them.
Whether these beings truly inhabit the Veilstream or merely pass through it remains one of cosmology's greatest mysteries.
Despite millennia of study, no mortal truly understands the Veilstream. No one knows where it begins. No one knows where it ends. No explorer has ever reached the source of its currents or discovered what lies beyond the Pool of Mana.
Some philosophers believe the Veilstream extends beyond Arcainia itself, connecting countless worlds across an infinite multiverse. Others claim its deepest reaches conceal forgotten gods, extinct civilizations, impossible cities, and echoes of dreams dreamt before creation itself.
Those who have ventured deepest into the current rarely return. Those who do seldom agree on what they witnessed. Perhaps some mysteries are not meant to be solved.
