"Every soul is a story written in living mana. No two have ever been alike, nor will they ever be again."
— Rhysaandr, the Ashen Witness
Every living creature born with true consciousness possesses a soul: an immortal spark of condensed primordial mana that originates from the Cosmic Mana Pool. While the body is mortal and the mind changes throughout life, the soul endures beyond death, carrying the essence of one's identity through eternity.
Mortals rarely see their own soul. Most live and die without ever perceiving it directly. Through profound introspection, powerful spiritual experiences, or near-death encounters, some may catch fleeting glimpses of its true nature. Others witness it only after death, when it is placed upon the Scales of Fate within the Chamber of Fates. Only beings of extraordinary perception—such as the Threefold Witness, the Fates, certain ancient dragons, and the gods themselves—can behold souls with clarity.
To these beings, a soul is not merely a light; it is a masterpiece.
Long before the first world formed, before stars burned, before even the gods walked the cosmos, there was only the Cosmic Mana Pool. The Pool is not simply the source of magic—it is the wellspring of consciousness itself. Whenever new life is born anywhere within the Arcainian Multiverse, a fragment of the Pool condenses into a unique spiritual pattern. That pattern becomes a soul.
No two souls have ever formed alike. Every soul is a singular expression of creation, shaped by infinite possibility before it ever experiences life. The body serves as its vessel. The soul serves as its eternal self.
When life ends, the soul returns to the great cycle from which it came.
The journey of every soul follows an ancient cosmic rhythm:
Cosmic Mana Pool
↓
A soul is formed.
↓
Birth.
↓
Life shapes the soul through every choice, relationship, triumph, and failure.
↓
Death.
↓
The Chamber of Fates.
↓
The soul is judged.
↓
One of three paths follows:
Eternal peace with loved ones.
Reincarnation.
Damnation within the Hells.
Should a soul choose reincarnation, it drinks from the Cosmic Mana Pool before returning to mortal life.
The waters dissolve the memories of previous lives, allowing a new beginning while preserving the soul's deeper essence.
Nothing in creation is ever truly destroyed.
Everything returns to the current.
Unlike ordinary mana, which can be manipulated, exhausted, or dispersed, soul-mana possesses permanence. A soul does not store memories in the way the mind does. Instead, it preserves something deeper:
Identity
Conviction
Love
Compassion
Curiosity
Fear
Regret
Hope
Purpose
Experiences do not simply create memories; they reshape the soul itself. Every meaningful decision leaves an imprint upon its pattern, making it increasingly unique throughout a lifetime.
Although often spoken of interchangeably, these are three distinct aspects of mortal existence.
The mind is the realm of thoughts, memories, imagination, emotions, and dreams. It changes constantly throughout life. Dreamwalkers, telepaths, and certain fey possess the ability to enter another's mind, perceiving it as a symbolic landscape known as a Mindscape. One person's mind might resemble:
An endless library
A ruined castle
A quiet forest
An enchanted garden
A frozen mountain
Floating islands above an endless sea
Mindscapes evolve alongside the individual. As thoughts change, so does the landscape.
The spirit is the living connection between body and soul. It is the current through which life and mana flow. Without the spirit, the soul cannot inhabit the body. Without the soul, the spirit has no identity to sustain.
Healing magic strengthens the spirit. Necromancy often manipulates lingering spiritual remnants.
When death occurs, the spirit slowly dissipates while the soul continues its journey beyond the mortal world.
The soul is the immortal core of a being. Unlike the mind, it changes only through life's deepest experiences. Unlike the spirit, it survives death.
To beings capable of perceiving souls, they do not appear as physical bodies or ghostly apparitions. Instead, every soul manifests as an abstract expression unlike anything else in existence. One soul may resemble stained glass illuminated from within. Another may appear as liquid silver flowing through crystal. Others resemble burning embers suspended in darkness, blooming flowers, ancient roots embracing gemstones, an endless aurora, or a perfectly still lake beneath which countless colors quietly shimmer.
No language has ever adequately described every soul, because no soul has ever repeated itself.
Every soul vibrates with its own unique resonance. This spiritual frequency cannot be replicated. It explains why:
Certain people feel instantly familiar.
Soulmates recognize one another across lifetimes.
Ancient artifacts choose specific wielders.
Resurrection magic requires the correct soul.
Bloodline magic can transcend generations.
Some creatures instinctively trust—or fear—someone they have never met.
Resonance is the invisible music of identity. While the mind speaks through words, the soul sings through resonance.
Contrary to popular belief, souls are not simply white lights. Those capable of perceiving them witness countless colors shifting together in impossible ways. These colors do not represent morality. Instead, they reflect aspects of a soul's nature.
Examples include (Color → Common Resonance):
Gold → Selfless purpose
Deep Blue → Wisdom and contemplation
Emerald → Growth and compassion
Crimson → Passion and determination
Silver → Resolve and honor
Amber → Joy and warmth
Violet → Creativity and imagination
Black → Mystery, depth, and the unknown
White → Serenity and inner peace
Most souls contain dozens—or even hundreds—of colors interwoven into patterns unique to their owner.
Powerful magic can separate a soul from its mortal vessel before it reaches the Chamber of Fates. This process is extraordinarily dangerous. A properly prepared Soul Gem preserves the soul's resonance within Arcainium crystal, preventing it from continuing its natural journey.
Such gems possess immense magical potential because they contain not only mana, but living identity itself. Destroying the gem releases the imprisoned soul. Damaging the gem may scar it. Corrupting it risks permanent spiritual injury.
The infamous Black Soul Gems are among the greatest blasphemies ever created. Rather than housing a single soul, they imprison many at once, forcing countless unique resonances into violent discord. The resulting spiritual dissonance radiates madness, anguish, and unimaginable magical instability.
Following death, every soul arrives within the Chamber of Fates. There, the Fates place it upon the ancient Scales of Fate. The scales do not weigh good deeds against evil deeds, nor do they count sins or virtues. Instead, they weigh what the soul has become.
A lifetime of cruelty gradually twists a soul toward discord. A life of compassion, humility, sacrifice, and genuine growth brings it into harmony with itself.
Even great heroes may carry heavy burdens. Even terrible people may sincerely transform before death. The Scales perceive not reputation, but truth.
Among all beings in existence, few understand souls more deeply than the Threefold Witness. No illusion can deceive them; no glamour can conceal one's essence; no disguise can alter the resonance of a soul. To them, every individual appears as an irreplaceable work of cosmic art.
One mortal's mind may resemble an enchanted garden surrounded by wrought-iron gates, carefully hiding the paths that lead inward. Yet their soul might appear as fragments of brilliant stained glass resting beneath the surface of an impossibly still lake, each piece refracting colors unseen anywhere else in creation.
These are not metaphors. This is how the Witness truly perceives them.
Across the civilizations of Arcainia, countless philosophies attempt to answer the same question: What is a soul?
Priests call it the divine spark. Wizards describe it as perfected mana. Druids see it as nature remembering itself. Bards compare it to an eternal song. The Fates simply call it... a story.
For every soul begins as a single drop drawn from the Cosmic Mana Pool. Everything that follows is written by the life it chooses to live. And when that story reaches its final page, its essence returns to the current—not erased, but transformed, becoming part of the endless well from which future souls will one day arise.
